Do You Smell Like God?

I know that is a very odd question and some of you are seriously wondering if I have lost my marbles.  Some of you are wondering if I am going to ask you to sniff yourself.  Someone has probably just tried it sitting at their computer. 🙂

The question doesn’t mean any of that.  I have read through the New Testament countless times in my life.   I just recently had the “I’ve never seen that before” discovery even though I have read that passage many times before.  When you see the passage the question may make some sense.

14But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.15For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.16To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?” 2 Corinthians 2:14–16

Paul is writing to the Corinthian church and telling them they smell.

From this passage two things jump out at me:

  • It is God who gives us our smell.  14But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.”  It is God who directs and spreads the smell permeating from my life.  The question is what scent are you giving off?  This brings me to the second point.
  • People react to the same smell differently.  15For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.”  We are called to be Christ to those around us.  This is a scent that others smell in our lives and we can lead people to Christ or away from Him.  So how well are you doing that this summer?  Have you been Christ to your parents and family OR would they have a difficult time finding the smell of Christ in your life?  How about your friends?  Do they smell Christ in your life by your actions OR do they smell something ungodly from you?  Even Paul admits this responsibility is tough, “And who is equal to such a task?”

But there is a way to be Christ and Paul discusses this with the Ephesian church.  In Ephesians 5, Paul writes 1Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”  Imitate God this summer by living “a life of love” to those around you.
